Taken together, the stories provide a nuanced and thoughtful perspective on Iran and Iranian Americans at a time when most Americans are exposed to a steady diet of negative media representations of Iranian culture and people in both Iran and the United States. The authors in this collection include both acclaimed authors such as Anita Amirrezvani, Porochista Khakpour, Laleh Khadivi, and Nahid Rachlin, as well as emerging authors. The stories and novel excerpts explore the experiences of this immigrant group in its attempts to adjust and assimilate in the face of major historical upheavals such as the 1979 Iranian revolution, the hostage crisis, and the attacks of September 11, 2001.
